Our Team

The English Department is characterized by the overwhelming majority of youthful faces of its members, which explains why it is a very vibrant and dynamic team. They have different strengths and personal styles. This is an asset to both students and school because their contributions are varied and comprehensive. In fact, we have very strong collaboration within the team. Other than the school policy of peer class observations, peer book inspections and lesson study initiatives, we have strong bonding in our daily work as well. We have co-planning for lessons and regular form meetings to solve problems together and share teaching ideas. We take great pride in our strong rapport both with colleagues and students.

Our School Language Policy and Small Class Teaching

Our school adopts Chinese as our medium of instruction. In order to enhance students’ English proficiency, we invest a lot of human resources in the teaching of English. On top of our school-based small class policy, we have extra language classes in which students' ability is taken into consideration when streaming. Students of approximate ability are grouped into the same classes to facilitate teaching and learning. With smaller class sizes, more interactive language activities can be carried out to maximize student-centered learning. In the meantime, learning materials are geared to the interest, ability and needs of students in different ability classes. This is to raise and sustain students' interest and motivation.

Our English Ambassadors

To nurture an English-rich environment, besides our NET, we have about one hundred English Ambassadors in our school each year. They all volunteer to become a member of such a vibrant team. They help teachers to promote English through helping with the planning and implementation of English activities as well as speaking in the morning assembly on Wednesday, which is a regular English morning assembly.

Inter-school Competitions

Other than organizing English language activities in the school, we endeavour to encourage students to challenge themselves through joining inter-school competitions, especially in speaking. Each year, we have around 70 students joining different categories of competition in the School Speech Festival. It is hoped that students' confidence and motivation to excel in English can be boosted through such participation.

Overseas Trips

In order to broaden students’ horizons, we have organized overseas study tours for students. The destinations are mostly Asian countries and cities like Singapore, Brunei and Malaysia because of their socio-economic background and strong English speaking culture. Students have been to Sabah in Malaysia. It was an absolutely fabulous experience for participating students. Besides enjoying an eye-opening trip visiting the famous natural attractions of Kota Kinabalu, students also visited a local Chinese school for cultural exchanges. It was certainly a very rewarding experience to them. Throughout the trip, they had to cope with a totally native English environment because the local tour guides and our two native speaking teachers all spoke to them in English. They felt the authentic need to communicate in English.
